      Introduction to HSK
The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is China's national standardized test designed and developed to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers (including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students from Chinese national minorities).

HSK is divided into three categories: beginners’ level (HSK Basic), elementary to intermediate level (HSK Elementary-Intermediate), and advanced level (HSK Advanced).

HSK tests are held regularly both at domestic test centers and at overseas test centers each year. HSK Certificates are issued to those who have obtained the required scores.

Chinese proficiency certificates are permanently valid. However, as a proof of Chinese proficiency for foreign students applying for enrollment into different types of schools at various levels in China, HSK scores are valid for two years from the date of examination.

      Objective
To provide a preparatory full-time course for students who are seeking enrollment in a college, university or institute in China as undergraduate or research students. Or, for those non-Chinese native speakers, who want to leverage on their Chinese proficiency to gain acceptance by businesses or other hiring organizations, thereby gain the opportunities for a position and promotion, or job-related training.

      Course Duration
There are two Semesters per year: Semester 1: January to June, Semester 2: July to December. Students can choose to enroll in the Semester 1 or Semester 2. At the end of each Semester, students are required to take the Semestral Examination and the School will issue the Semestral Examination report cards to the students.

      Teacher/Student Ratio
The optimum teacher-student ratio stipulated for the courses is capped at 1:23.

      Course Material
Course materials include class notes, MOE-approved text books, slide presentation, educational media.

      Course Outline
Teachers will conduct the teaching in accordance with the various HSK levels. The courses include:

      Course Commencement and End Date
All HSK courses are open for registration all-year round. The first half-year courses commence on 2nd January and ends on 30th June; the second half-year courses commence on 1st July and ends on 31st December of every year.

      Manner of Assessment

      • The assessment scheme for modules in the School’s courses is standardised as follows:

        Class Test/Project / Assignment / Homework/ Attendance Written examination
        40% 60%
      • The class test/ project/ assignment/ homework/ attendance component may have sub-components if deemed appropriate by the teacher. These multiple assessments collectively help teaching staff to reliably establish the abilities and competencies of students.
      • Borderline fail cases will be reviewed appropriately. The student may justify his or her failure with the group of teachers concerned. Final decision will be made by Academic Manager.
      • A list of students who meet the requirements for a School award will be compiled at the end of each course. For a student to receive this award, besides meeting the course requirements for graduation, fees must be paid in full and the student must have a minimum overall attendance of 75% (or 90% for international students) for the entire course.
      • Students who have not passed their modules may submit an appeal for review of results using our school's Results Appeal Form through the Administrative Manager stating their reasons. This appeal must be submitted within 1 week of the release of the exam results, together with payment of the required fee.
      • The School works within the following timeline for processing and releasing the final exam results and appeal results. a) Release of final exam results – within 4 weeks after completion of the final paper of the examination b) Release of appeal results – within 4 weeks from the official date of release of the exam results (or 3 weeks from the close of the appeal period)
      • A student whose appeal is unsuccessful may apply to the School to take a re-test with payment of a re-test fee. This application must be submitted within 1 week of the release of the appeal results. If the student fails the re-test, he must either repeat the module or take a new module in order to accumulate the required number of passed modules for graduation.
      • A student who chooses not to appeal may apply to the School to take a re-test, with payment of a re-test fee, within 1 week of the release of the exam results.

      HSK (Intermediat) scoring system:
Interpretation of the scores of HSK Intermediate:

A sub score of HSK Elementary-Intermediate is a scale score with 50 as the mean and 15 as the standard deviation. The total score is a scale score with 200 as the mean and 60 as the standard deviation. These scores show the relative position of the candidate in a standard HSK sample group. In table 2.1, it indicates the relative position of a candidate in the whole group. The column on the right gives the percentage of those whose scores are lower than the corresponding scores in the standard HSK reference group. The total score is not equal to the sum of all the subscores.

      HSK Score Percentage
      Total Score Sub Score
      277 69 90
      250 63 80
      231 58 70

      200 50 50
      185 46 40

      Course Completion and Award
Table 2.2 shows the subscores of HSK Intermediate as well as the types and grades of the certificate of HSK Intermediate.

In table 2.2, HSK Intermediate has a bottom line below level C, which is established for the convenience of setting the standards for the HSK Intermediate certificate. Thus, the bottom line cannot be used for measuring a beginner's level. The candidate cannot fail the certificate of HSK Intermediate if any score falls below the minimum elementary subs core requirements.
